Santos is facing a severe financial crisis that could see its biggest stars walk away for nothing. The Brazilian club has reportedly failed to pay three months of image rights to several key players, with the latest installment expiring on Monday, according to UOL.
This breach of contract represents a significant legal risk for Santos. Under Brazilian law, image rights are considered part of a player’s salary. In addition to the unpaid image rights, the club has also missed April’s regular wages and failed to collect mandatory FGTS (severance fund) contributions. Performance-related bonuses are also overdue, creating a toxic atmosphere in the dressing room at a critical stage of the season.
The persistent delays give players the legal ground to pursue “indirect rescission” of their contracts through labor courts. If the debts remain unsettled, superstars like Neymar and Memphis Depay could terminate their deals and become free agents. No athlete has yet filed a lawsuit, but the threat of a mass exodus looms over Vila Belmiro.
President Marcelo Teixeira acknowledged the crisis: “We are still facing a very serious financial crisis, and everyone knows it. We have two image rights payments that are overdue. They understand. It’s not normal, but I can guarantee that it doesn’t affect the athletes’ performance. Quite the opposite. They trust the management.”
The timing is particularly troubling ahead of a crucial Copa do Brasil match against Coritiba on Wednesday. Manager Cuca and the highest earners in the squad are among those waiting for overdue payments, while lower-paid staff have been fully paid.
After a recent victory over Red Bull Bragantino, tension boiled over in the dressing room. President Teixeira visited last Sunday and faced direct demands from players about the outstanding debts. In response, he offered a verbal guarantee to pay April’s salaries and at least one month of the overdue image rights “as soon as possible.”
The club’s financial woes raise serious questions about its ability to retain top talent, with the possibility of free transfers now a real threat.
